Carter+Burton Architecture
We are a small Virginia architecture firm that specializes in a few good projects per year. Our practice is located in Berryville, a small town one hour west of Washington, DC. We are in this business because we love to design and work with people. Our commitment is in doing modern work within a wide range of budgets. As modern architects, we are willing to travel to the right client and project. Our focus is on quality, craftmanship, and innovation. We try to promote passive solar techniques and eco-friendly building materials.
Page Carter studied at the University of Virginia, University of Oregon, Cambridge University, and earned a master’s degree in architecture at Harvard University under Rafael Moneo. She apprenticed with SOM/Houston, RTKL in Baltimore, and has traveled extensively overseas. In 1991, she brought her understanding of details and systems to Berryville, Virginia, where she established the region’s only modern architecture practice.
Jim Burton graduated from Mississippi State University, where he studied under Sam Mockbee and Chris Rischer. Apprenticing for a conservative firm in Middleburg, Virginia, he considered local builders and architectural publications his mentors. He has won several design awards as a young architect, most recently for ‘Studio Loggerheads,’ a 1,300 square foot satellite office house in the Frogtown Community of Clarke County, Virginia.
graduating from Virginia Tech’s architecture program in 1985, Pete apprenticed with Architecture firms in New York City and Boston. Seeking a broad experience, he worked on projects ranging from small shops and restaurants in NYC’s SOHO district to the 21 million dollar A.I.A. gold medal-winning Hostos Community Center. Fostering an interest in vernacular buildings and the patterns of small towns, Pete moved to the Shenandoah Valley in 1995. In Carter + Burton Architecture, he has found a firm who shares a design philosophy which respects a building’s relationship to time as well as to its surroundings.
Leesa graduated from the University of Virginia and the University of Oregon where her studies focused on the balance of modern architecture with sustainable design, and research in building materials, historic preservation and teaching. As a licensed architect and a LEED accredited professional at Carter + Burton Architecture, she brings all these interests together in the workplace while promoting the priorities of good design and green building with the clients’ wants and needs. She believes strongly in continuing education to bring synthesis of sustainable and modern design in architecture, and strives to bring further understanding to our clients.
Michelle graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Michelle’s studies focused on Interior Architecture and the conceptual integration of building materials, site, and function of space. While at Virginia Tech, she was selected to participate in an interdisciplinary program with industrial designers and architects, which focused on furniture design. Prior to working with Carter + Burton, Michelle worked on the reuse and revitalization of Federal Triangle (Ronald Reagan, ICC / Customs, and Ariel Rios Buildings) in Washington, DC, for the EPA. Michelle joined the team of Carter + Burton in August 2001 to offer services in Interiors Design. The firm specializes in residential, commercial, and institutional work, while focusing on contemporary concepts, sustainable design, and healthy house issues. The Interiors and Architecture teams will work together to select materials and will complement each other in serving the client towards the final product.
