General Notes Regarding Healthy House
The wool fibers of the Tibetan rug were not stripped of their natural oils (lanolin) that act as a stain guard. In many mass-produced rugs and carpets, the lanolin is removed and a chemical stain repellant is added which would have affected the health of the client. The wool is also dyed with vegetable dyes rather than chemically created dyes.

Fabrics for reupholstering furniture were tested for odors that would affect the client. As an added precaution, the fabrics were also off-gassed off site.

During the design process we were planning to use perforated roller shades on the windows, but at the time they were not made without PVC. The PVC on the shades is a plastic coating which off-gasses volatile organic compounds (voc’s). Lutron has since developed a line of perforated PVC-Free Sheer Shades that may be considered.

Custom furniture was created with the use of water-based urethanes and all the stains were tested prior to use. The Spiral table was off-gassed prior to install.

Great care was taken throughout the project to ensure that the client would not be affected in an adverse manner by the items procured. It was necessary to find a balance of good design with healthy materials. The design industry has made great leaps and bounds in the past several years and we hope that they continue to do so in order to meet the needs of people with chemical allergies as well as those with such common afflictions as allergies and asthma.

The majority of the furnishings, accessories, artwork, and lighting were from the clients’ extensive collection.
