SITE
Located in Jim Barnett Park and is an addition to the War Memorial Building

The dual function addition to the War Memorial will add flexibility and functionality to the existing facility. With additional space, expanded services will be available, while the pressures imposed on the existing spaces have been lessened. Renovations to the existing facility will bring the Center as a whole forward into the future. The design of the addition, as well as the site, required creative inclusions of many factors. Parking and drop-off strategies, fontality-good and bad views, and the relocation of utilities were considered, in addition to a number of other aspects. The planning of the Center, with its active and more quiet aspects connect and relate to Shenandoah University, the Winchester-Frederick County Park structures, as well as the future Green Circle. The new Center will service two distinct, yet overlapping purposes: a new home for the Senior Center, in addition to expanded facilities for group athletics. Group spaces will be located in close proximity to the new gym, allowing a great deal of flexibility, in addition to added practicality. The facility will connect with the park, while addressing the security concerns inherent to multiple entrances. The new facility should reflect and compliment both its physical and functional context. Thoughtful use of natural light, ventilation and filtration systems, and universal design techniques insure a safe and healthy building.
